How, why, and when did Satan fall from heaven? Answer: Satan’s fall from heaven is symbolically described in Isaiah 14 12 to 14, and Ezekiel 28 12 to 18. While these two passages are referring specifically to the kings of Babylon and Tyre, they also reference the spiritual power behind those kings, namely, Satan. These passages describe why Satan fell, but they do not specifically say when the fall occurred. What we do know is this: the angels were created before the earth (Job 38:4-7). Satan fell before he tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden (Genesis 3, 1 to 14). Satan’s fall, therefore, must have occurred somewhere after the time the angels were created and before he tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Whether Satan’s fall occurred hours, days, or years before he tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden, Scripture does not specifically say. Yet, it is more likely than not, or beyound a reasonable doubt that, Satan fell in the garden with Adam. That was when iniquity was found in Satan. Satan's job was to minister to Adam. While performing his regular duties, Satan realized that Adam had authority that he himself did not have. That was unconditional authority. It was the same authority that men associated with the tower of babel had. While Satan's authority was conditional. His authority was upon condition that he was obedient to God's word. When Satan fel, he lost his authority. Yet, with Adam's authority, Satan could come against God and still maintain some of his authority. That is when his plan to acquire Adam's authority took root. The book of Job tells us, at least at that time, Satan still had access to heaven and to the throne of God. “One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, ’Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the LORD, ‘From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it’”. Apparently at that time, Satan was still moving freely between heaven and earth, speaking to God directly and answering for his activities. At that time he was defined as, the prince of the air, according to Ephesians 2 2. He had not yet fallen to the earth. Rather he had fallen from grace, to the heavenlies. Whether God has discontinued this access to heaven is a matter of debate. Some say Satan's access to heaven was ended at the death of Christ. Others believe Satan's access to heaven will be ended at the end times war in heaven, in Revelation 12 7, when there will no longer be a place found for him in heaven. That is when he will fall to the earth, and woe, be unto the earth. For the devil will have come down among you. Why did Satan fall from heaven? Satan fell because of pride. He desired to be God, not to be a servant of God. Notice the many “I will...” statements in Isaiah 14. Ezekiel 28 describes Satan as an exceedingly beautiful angel. Satan was likely the highest of all angels, the anointed cherub, the most beautiful of all of God's creations, but he was not content in his position. Instead, Satan desired to be God, to essentially “kick God off His throne” and take over the rule of the universe. Satan wanted to be God, and interestingly enough, that is essentially what Satan tempted Adam and Eve with in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3, 1 to 5). How did Satan fall from heaven? Actually, a fall is not an accurate description. It would be far more accurate to say God cast Satan out of heaven. Satan did not fall from heaven; rather, Satan was pushed. When did Satan fall from Heaven? We believe the Genesis account is to be taken literally just as it was written. It teaches the world was created in six, twenty- four hour days about 6,000 years ago; there was no gap. There was no period of time before the original creation. There was actually no time. God made time as well as matter and space. Perhaps Satan did not fall from heaven until about one hundred years after the creation. He could not have fallen before the creation because he was spoken about in the book of Ezekiel as being good while in the garden. Look at Ezekiel 28, 13 to 15, “Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.” He was Lucifer, a good angel or cherub, and he was in the Garden. The Garden of Eden wasn’t made until day six, so that shoots the gap theory full of holes right there. Not only that, but Jesus said in Matthew 19 4 that the creation of Adam and Eve was the beginning. Read what it says: “And he answered and said unto them, “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female.” Romans 5 12 says that there was no death until Adam sinned, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Those who say that Satan fell from heaven and wiped out the pre-Adamic civilization are placing death before sin. They have just eliminated the need for Christ to die on the cross. There was no death until sin came into the world. Exodus 20:11 states, “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is…” This is found in the middle of the Ten Commandments. God made the whole universe in six, literal twenty-four-hour days, including time, the angels, and everything that is. What day He made the angels is not known since the Genesis story is mainly telling events on the earth. The angels were probably made on the first day, before God laid the foundations of the earth. Genesis 1 31 tells us everything was very good at the end of the creation week, so Satan had not fallen yet. Satan did not fall until after the creation, maybe as long as one hundred or so years later. All that we know is Adam was 130 when Seth was born. That is the first date given in Scripture. Before Seth, they had Cain and Abel, but dates are not given. Before he had Cain and Abel, they were removed from the garden. Therefore, it would have been somewhere around a hundred years during which time Satan may have become jealous of the fellowship that Adam and Eve enjoyed with God. Satan may have observed their relationship for one hundred years and said, “Hey, I want them to worship me! I want to rule humanity. I want to walk with them in the garden. I will ascend unto the high heavens. I will take over the seat of the Most High. I will, I will, I will”. One theory, though it cannot be proven, is that Satan did not fall until one hundred years after the creation. The fall could not have been in the original creation because he was still the light bearer in the Garden of Eden. Isaiah 14, 12 to 17. -How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! -For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: -I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. -Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. -They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; -That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? Ezekiel 28, 12 to 26. -Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. -Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. -Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. -Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. -By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. -Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. -Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. -All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. Revelation 12, 1 to 17. -And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: -And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. -And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. -And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. -And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. -And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. - And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, -And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. -And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. -And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. -And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. -Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. -And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. -And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. -And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. -And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. -And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Luke 10 18. -And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 2 Peter 2 4. -For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; John 8 44. -Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. Revelation 20, 1 to 3. -And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. -And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, -And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Matthew 25 41. -Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 1 Peter 5, 8 to 9. -Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: -Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. Genesis 3, 14 to 15. -And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: -And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ephesians 2 2. -Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
